Reliance Threatens Legal Action Against Developer Over JioHotstar Domain

Developer Buys JioHotstar Domain Pre-Merger

Recently, news broke that a Delhi-based app developer purchased the domain name 'JioHotstar' with the hope of profiting from the rumored merger between JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar. The developer, who has chosen to remain anonymous, left a message for Reliance Industries, offering to sell the domain to them.

The developer's intention was clear: they wanted to fund their education at Cambridge University. On a landing page linked to the domain, they mentioned that they had purchased the domain last year when they first heard about the potential merger. The message read, "I bought this domain thinking that if the merger happens, I could sell it and use the money to fulfill my dream of studying at Cambridge."

In an update posted on Thursday, it was revealed that the developer had asked for £93,345 (equivalent to ₹1.01 crore). This amount corresponds to the tuition fees for the Executive MBA program at Cambridge University. The update also noted that a senior executive from Reliance, Ambujesh Yadav, Associate Vice President, Commercials, had contacted the developer regarding the domain.

Reliance Industries, however, is not taking this lightly. Reports suggest the company has threatened the developer with legal action. Reliance, known for its aggressive business strategies, is likely to pursue legal measures to reclaim the domain without paying the exorbitant fee.

The situation brings into focus the legal implications of cybersquatting, a practice where individuals buy domain names associated with well-known brands or upcoming business ventures, hoping to sell them for a profit later. In India, such actions can lead to lawsuits under the Information Technology Act, which prohibits using domain names similar to existing brands to mislead or extort money.

Conclusion

The battle over the JioHotstar domain highlights the risks of cybersquatting and the importance of intellectual property rights in the digital age. With Reliance Industries showing no sign of giving in to the developer’s demands, this case could set a precedent for future disputes involving domain name ownership and corporate mergers.
